Job Summary
In 2013, the West End Business Improvement Association (WEBIA) and Gordon Neighbourhood House (GNH) joined forces to launch the Clean Team—a grassroots initiative designed to keep West End streets and public spaces beautiful and welcoming. For over a decade, friendly Clean Team staff (often seen pushing their blue cleaning carts) have been picking up litter, erasing graffiti, and removing unauthorized posters along Davie, Denman, and Robson Streets five days a week. At the same time, dedicated volunteers contribute by pitching in at seasonal community clean-up events. Together, the Clean Team plays a vital role in keeping the West End clean, vibrant, and a community we can all take pride in.
Key Responsibilities
-Remove litter and debris from public sidewalks and plazas
-Remove unauthorized posters, stickers, and advertisements for public surfaces
-Clean or report graffiti on public surfaces and street furniture
-Identify and report illegal dumping and hazardous waste to relevant authorities
-Safely dispose of substance use paraphernalia
-Follows safety procedures, uses good judgment, and contact a supervisor if something unusual or unsafe occurs
-Engage with community members and local businesses in a respectful and friendly manner
-Help maintain a positive presence in the neighbourhood while promoting pride in public spaces
-Attend required training, workshops, meetings, and events
-Track and report activities as required (daily logs, photos, etc.)
Qualifications
-Team-oriented: An enthusiastic team player who contributes to the success of the program
-Self-motivated: Able to follow safety guidelines and instructions, take initiative, and work independently when needed
-Respectful and community-minded: Understands the importance of this public-facing role in a diverse and dynamic neighbourhood
-Reliable and punctual: Shows up on time, prepared, and ready to work
-Comfortable outdoors: Willing and able to work in all weather conditions
-Physically capable: Can stand, walk, bend, and push a litter collection cart for up to 4 km per shift
-Able to lift up to 9 kg (20 lbs): Comfortable with light physical tasks
-Willing to complete a criminal record check
Skills and Competencies
-Ability to communicate promptly and effectively with team members
-Experience interacting with a wide range of community members
-Experience in janitorial/cleaning or outdoor work is considered an asset
-First aid training or willingness to learn, and additional languages is considered an asset
-Conflict de-escalation skills are considered an asset
-Ongoing staff training provided to support staff
Hour of Operations
Clean Team shifts are scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, with additional meetings, training sessions, and special events as needed.

Position Overview:
We are looking for a reliable, skilled, and punctual Cook to join our team at Gordon Neighbourhood House. This position will play a vital role in supporting our community meal programs, including community lunches, food security programs, community dinners, and special events. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing menus, preparing healthy, nutritious meals, managing food budgets and overseeing volunteers in the kitchen, ensuring that all food safety standards are strictly followed.
Key Responsibilities:
-Prepare menus and cook healthy meals for community meals, and special events
-Oversee kitchen volunteers, providing guidance, mentorship, and support as needed
-Ensure all food is prepared following FoodSafe best practices, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen
-Monitor food supplies, and ensure the efficient use of ingredients to minimize waste
-Set up and clean up kitchen and dining areas before and after meals
-Maintain punctuality and professionalism while working in a fast-paced environment
-Create and follow established recipes or suggest creative, nutritious meal ideas that align with the needs of our programs
Qualifications:
_Valid Food Safe Level 1 Certificate
-Must successfully complete a criminal record check prior to employment
-Proven experience cooking for groups or in a community setting
-Knowledge of FoodSafe practices
-Ability to supervise and lead a team of volunteers
-Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
-Punctual, reliable, and able to manage costs and time effectively
-A passion for preparing healthy meals and contributing to the well-being of the community
-A driver’s license and access to a vehicle or car-share network is considered an asset
This position is up to 18 hours per week and can include work on evenings and weekends.

On-Call Out of School Child Care Worker
Job Description
Gordon Neighbourhood House’s Out-of-School care program is looking for an Out of School Care Worker to facilitate and implement exciting and educational programming for children ages 5 – 10. The Out of School Care Worker will work as a team to plan and execute creative, supportive, and FUN activities for up to 40 children. We are looking for interactive and positive role models who can engage with a variety of youth and parents in a supportive, community-driven environment. At Gordon House, we provide high-quality childcare as part of our broader commitment to a just, healthy, dynamic and intergenerational West End. We deeply embed principles of social justice into our program, which includes commitments to anti-racism, decolonization, and inclusion for children with disabilities as well as children from LGBTQ+ families. Our childcare is a progressive and dynamic place to work, and we are looking for the right people to move our program closer to that vision.
Flexible hours are available. The program runs from Monday to Friday 7:20 am – 9:20 am, and from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. We are looking for candidates who can work all, some or casual shifts. Starting rate $21.36/hour, 4-30 hours per week available. A competitive benefit package is available for all permanent staff over 17.5 hours per week. Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a related field, or a combination of relevant coursework and employment experience.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Ability to facilitate, implement, and modify programs for children with differing abilities.
- Experience working in a licensed facility, in a leadership role with children ages 5-10 years.
- Effective time management, organization, and oversight of activities while working with a diverse range of ages and children’s abilities.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques
- Valid First Aid certification
- Class 4 license an asset
