Celebrating Volunteers: Building Connection, Care, and Community

During National Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 19–25), we celebrated the many ways volunteers made Gordon Neighbourhood House a place of connection, care, and belonging. With a volunteer team that far outnumbered staff, their impact was felt in every corner of our community.
At the heart of their contributions was connection. By showing up with consistency and care, volunteers helped create welcoming, inclusive spaces where people felt seen, valued, and supported across generations.
They also played a vital role in advancing food access and food justice—preparing and sharing meals, supporting community kitchens, and bringing people together through food, culture, and conversation.
Volunteers were also leaders in learning and skill sharing, offering workshops, peer support, and hands-on knowledge in everything from cooking and gardening to language and technology. These exchanges were reciprocal, building confidence and strengthening relationships throughout the community.
Through acts of care and support, volunteers walked alongside seniors, newcomers, and families—offering both practical help and meaningful connection. Their contributions helped create spaces grounded in dignity, respect, and belonging.
They also helped bring our neighbourhood to life. From community events and cultural celebrations to creative projects and placemaking, volunteers contributed time, energy, and ideas that reflected the diversity and vibrancy of our community.
Thank you to all our volunteers for the countless ways you showed up. You helped build a more connected, nourished, and caring community every day.
