Keeping Our Streets Match Ready

June 2026 was one of the busiest months on record for the Clean Team program, with increased activity likely connected to the large crowds visiting the West End during FIFA games.

The Clean Team is a long-standing partnership between Gordon Neighbourhood House and the West End BIA, working together to keep commercial streets, public spaces, and the wider neighbourhood clean, safe, and welcoming. Last month, Clean Team staff collected more than 120 bags of litter, surpassing the previous monthly record of 115 bags collected in July 2025. By comparison, the team collected 75 bags in June 2025—an increase of approximately 60% this year. Altogether, that represents more than 2,400 pounds of litter removed from West End streets, plazas, and parklets!

The Clean Team operates five days a week—Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., providing litter collection and sidewalk cleaning along Davie, Denman, and Robson Streets.

Their work goes far beyond picking up garbage. As ambassadors for both Gordon Neighbourhood House and the West End BIA, Clean Team members help strengthen connections between residents, businesses, and visitors. During their shifts, they remove small graffiti tags, provide directions to visitors, safely collect discarded substance use supplies, connect with neighbours and local businesses, wipe down picnic tables at the 1800 Davie Plaza, and report illegal dumping through 3-1-1.

Through this partnership, the Clean Team helps create a neighbourhood that feels cleaner, safer, and more welcoming for everyone who lives, works, and visits the West End.

In June, team members also received 108 words of thanks from neighbours and visitors—well above the usual number and a wonderful reflection of the care and dedication they bring to their work every day. Next time you spot the familiar blue carts around the West End, give a wave or a word of thanks—they always appreciate hearing from neighbours!
