Volunteer Role: Lunch Program Assistant 

Program: Community Lunch 
Location: Gordon Neighbourhood House, 1019 Broughton St, Vancouver, BC 
Time Commitment: Mondays or Fridays, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm 
Reporting To:  Community Chef

Gordon Neighbourhood House (GNH) began in 1942 as a place for residents in Vancouver’s West End to meet their neighbours.  For over 80 years GNH has worked closely with residents, businesses, and organizations to create dozens of programs, services and initiatives that respond to the needs and dreams of our neighbourhood.

Volunteering with GNH 

Gordon Neighbourhood House is a charitable organization that relies on the support of our public and private partners, donors, and volunteers.  Volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization, and we would not exist without our volunteers.    Volunteering provides benefits such as making a lasting difference in the community, rewarding experiences, meet neighbours, gain valuable skills, knowledge, and experience; free meals; appreciation events, letters of reference and certificates of appreciation. 

Community Lunch Program Description:  

Everyone is invited to Community Lunches at Gordon Neighbourhood House on Mondays and Fridays at 12 noon.  Our delicious meals are made from scratch and celebrate global flavours. Community Lunches are a great place to enjoy a healthy meal, meet neighbours, and catch up with friends.  Each meal includes a soup or salad, a main course, dessert, and organic coffee or tea at a minimal cost.  

Description of Community Lunch Program Assistant:  

Community Lunch Program Assistants are an essential ingredient of our community lunch program, and the program could not take place without volunteers!   Volunteers work alongside our skilled Community Chef and prepare ingredients, cook meals, set-up and take-down our lunchroom, serve meals, and wash and sanitize utensils and dishes.  
 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Support and assist the Community Lunch program for up to 30 participants. 
• Follow FoodSafe and sanitary food handling guidelines. 
• Perform a wide variety of tasks involved with the preparation, serving, cleaning of food. 
• Ensure a safe, accessible, inclusive, and welcoming environment for participants. 
• Volunteer with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. 

Requirements and expectations: 

• Assist with meal preparation and cooking and to serve food and refreshments. 
• Able to follow Foodsafe and sanitary food handling guidelines and follow staff instructions. 
• Able to physically stand, sit, kneel, bend, and move and lift 25 pounds to set up and take down the community lunchroom; to prepare food and to clean, wash and sanitize dishes. 
• Able to maintain a tidy appearance and good personal hygiene. 
• Must be dependable and punctual, courteous, personable, and friendly. 
• Complete and clear a Criminal Record Check.  

Preferred Skills and/or Experience: 

• FoodSafe Certificate or equivalent training 
• Food service and hospitality experience 
• Home kitchen and cooking knowledge and/or experience
