Food Rescue in Action: Volunteers Needed to Help Keep Good Food Moving in the West End

Home » News » Food Rescue in Action: Volunteers Needed to Help Keep Good Food Moving in the West End

Every week at Gordon Neighbourhood House, good food arrives at our doors thanks to local donors and a dedicated team of volunteers who help make food rescue possible.

Our Food Rescue Program is all about keeping quality food in circulation — supporting community programs and partners across the West End while reducing food waste. As the program continues to grow, we’re expanding our volunteer team and inviting more neighbours to get involved.

What Food Rescue Looks Like at GNH

Food rescue is a team effort. Volunteers support different parts of the process, including:

  • Setting up for food arrivals
  • Receiving donated food from local partners
  • Sorting and organizing food safely and efficiently
  • Redirecting food to Gordon Neighbourhood House programs and community partners

This behind-the-scenes work ensures food moves quickly to where it’s needed most — community meals, food access programs, and partner organizations across the West End.

We’re Also Looking for a Food Rescue Driver 🚗

In addition to our in-house food rescue volunteers, we are currently looking to add a Food Rescue Driver to the team.

Drivers support the program by transporting food donations from donor locations back to Gordon Neighbourhood House. This role is essential to keeping rescued food moving and complements the work done by volunteers on site.
